I used to feel like I needed to make conversation when we were on car trips. That I had to entertain or otherwise do my part while he navigates. Almost thirteen years into this journey, I talk if I want but otherwise, I read or listen to a podcast. When we drove to Atlanta a few weeks back, I took my Remarkable 2 tablet.
I spent the better part of 3ish hours brainstorming and free writing. All on the Remarkable 2 tablet. I love paper and notebooks and writing by hand. But sometimes I get lost in what I jot down (“where was that?") and it’s not always practical to have multiple Leuchtturm with me wherever I go. With this under-a-pound notebook not even an inch thick, I “flip” between what I need, as if I had different notebooks with me. Within the tablet, I have created (so far) eight sub notebooks. Each has an infinity of pages (I add and delete as needed) that I can attach various tags to. So within “Reading Journal 2024”, for example, I have a "currently reading" tag and one for non-fiction and fiction. I also have one page per book along with the date, aspects of the writing I liked (or didn’t), overall impressions, whether I finished it or not and what was the point of it. (H/T Sarina B. over at #AmWriting for her solo episode on how a reading journal makes her a better novelist.) My Remarkable 2 has become one of my favorite and most used tools in my kit.
What about you? The needle and thread sewing kit you keep close to your bed? Yoga mat? Kitchen-Aid mixer? In addition to your phone, what tools do you use and use?
I have to say this question has me thinking about a lot of things. I tend to be simple. I love my kitchen aid, but a good spoon will work just fine . I have a favorite paring knife that I bought at Winn Dixie in the early 70s, it might have cost 1.50 ! Never through the years have I found a knife I like the way I do this one. I guess my age shows now that I have given thought to the “tools” I am kind of addicted to. Coffee maker, oh yes I love my coffee. What I would really love is to still have my old stove top Corning percolator ! I prefer to grate cheese by hand and have several cheese graters I like. After pondering your question I realized just how “ old school” I am ! Give me the old simple tools anyday. I am thankful for modern conveniences, but more thankful that I still am able to enjoy the old and simple things there were a convenience in their day! Thanks Elizabeth for challenging my memories this morning !
I LOVE this, June! The idea that old and simple things - an inexpensive knife, a good spoon, reliable cheese graters - that were a convenience in their day are The Tools that you prefer today. So, so great. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. <3
