Upside downtown, across town, in a gown, all around.
I can read anywhere, (almost) any type: library, used, new, hardcover, paperback, audio. No e-reader.
But I don’t read anything.
A few years ago I read almost exclusively non-fiction. These days it’s about 50/50 with most of my non-fiction being memoir or memoir-adjacent i.e. a wonderful biography. (I just started The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington.) I’ll also do what I call a “research read” when it’s related to my area of interest: a skim and/or not read every chapter.
Any guesses which of these I shipped and which I bought?
I’m choosy about novels. I generally pass on romance and horror. I thrill for the unexpected (Beautyland, Poor Deer). Enjoy something that keeps me guessing (Martyr!, The Extinction of Irena Rey) and stories that fill my mouth with the tart taste of payback (The Hop, James).
I have no issue putting down a novel. Life is too short to dwell on a story that doesn’t tingle my toes in some essential way.

What kind of reader are you? Do you snub novels and only read non fiction? A book club is starting near you and members will only read _______. What is in that blank? What kind of reader are you?
My main reading is news. I probably do too much of that. I love a good novel and prefer one where I learn about another time or culture. I also read with/to my mom and try to find something with a quick pace that’s also funny. Fanny Flagg and early Barbara Kingsolver so far.
Bless your heart! News!!! GAH. :-) I love that you're reading novels with your mom! There's something soothing about reading together. Thanks for sharing, Susannah.
