"What are you most excited about?" I've been asked a lot recently. And truth be told, I have been struggling with an answer. People want to hear things like "travel" or "meeting new people" or "learning the language,". And those things are appealing. But Traumreise isn’t a vacation. It’s a move, temporary but still a move.
But it came to me recently that something I am excited about is less life management.
No part time job to schedule around.
Fewer back and forth schedule change hassles.
No last minute requests to pick up refreshments for a middle school dance.
No time in a car.

I love my part time job. I love my friends. I believe in MealTrains, building community, prioritizing connecting with others and supporting our schools. AND it takes an immense amount of time. I see why some parents NEVER volunteer. I see why women let friendships slide. I see why people don't bother to check on or talk to their neighbors. Our life is work and even when we make conscious choices to do other things--to not spend ALL the time working, to play, vacation, make a meal--the system itself has not stopped. We may be more rested and relaxed. Briefly. But then it’s all back on because nothing has really changed.
What are you most excited about? What’s coming up that has your juices flowing?
My biggest excitement is seeing my children and grandchildren , even if it’s brief! Nostalgia excites me! Old photos, the home I grew up in , the faces of the friends I grew up with in Durham and our memories. Steve and I love to take Sunday afternoon rides ( I know it sounds old fashioned ) ! We get excited to see schools, parks and the memories of our childhoods. We love our present very much, but there is something very exciting about memories of days gone by.
Oh I feel you, June! I love glimpses into the past. (Remember our conversations about your stint doing tea room modelling?) It sounds similar to what you’re saying, those schools, homes etc remind us where we came from. Thanks for sharing!
