60 years ago The Sound of Music hit the theaters. A dreamy aspiring nun, Maria, becomes governess to seven children and finds romantic love along the way. There’s a scene early on during a wild thunderstorm when child after child comes to Maria’s room in search of comfort. When they are all gathered together in her tiny, European-sized bed, Maria tells them when “anything bothers me and I’m unhappy, I just try and think about nice things,”.
Of course the children have a zillion lovely things but little love and attention so they’re flummoxed.
“What kind of nice things?” they ask.
And then as she does for much of the 174 minutes, Maria launches with barely a moment’s hesitation into song.
I wonder how helpful it would to be our own collective mental health if we could summon up a few of our favorite things? Perhaps not put to song — although if you do, send it my way!—but let the list cheer us up a bit, as one needs in the anxiety-inducing limbo that is life right now.
My 1975 Royal Sahara typewriter
So here are a few of my favorite things:
Fresh red raspberries
Vintage typewriters like my 1975 Royal Sahara (currently in storage, sob!), the same kind Jessica Fletcher uses in Murder She Wrote!
Being by the water, the smell of lavender, robust and clean public transportation, fresh homemade baked goods, spotting the bright red cardinals that sit in the trees outside our windows, live music.
Allison! This list makes me feel like I'm sitting right next to you. :-) And I love how you (of course) incorporated different senses into this question. So, so vivid. Thank you!
Handwritten letters, that first cup of coffee in the morning, fresh flowers, laughing with a friend, the sunlight on my face, candles and making candles, long walks, the beach, baths, cooking, and a strong hug! Also books and libraries (of course)!
What a splendid list, Holly! I read it and I’m surprised I forgot to include things like the beach! It’s fun too, to learn new things about you (candle making!!). Thanks for this great comment.
My first record player ,going to record store buying 45 and albums.
Listening, and actually exercising to Cathy Rigby and Jane Fonda work out albums.
The library was my spot. I started out reading magazines and always been a safe place.
Dancing all over the house to what ever station I could get.
The church bell that ranged!
Thanks for listening 🎧
