The first day of Summer is tomorrow. Summer! Summer is typically a library’s busiest season as people vacation and kids are out of school. As a little nerd with pink plastic framed glasses, I spent many a contented afternoon in the cool of the Belden Library. Libraries are any time but somehow, for me, they feel especially soothing in the summer.
I CANNOT WAIT to go back to my library. It’s one of the 52 things I’m most looking forward to when I get back home. I bought Ocean Vuong’s Emperor of Gladness in early May but I’m at my very best when surrounded by a small stack of fresh reads. So for the first time in over a year, I put two books* on hold at my local library. I’m pretty far down the waitlist for two of them but sometime this year, they will be mine. At least for three weeks.
Maybe you’re not reading anymore now than you would any other time and that’s fine. But I’d still love to know what’s on your nightstand or knapsack! So, beach read? New read? Reread?
Tell us what you’re reading.
Need a recommendation? I got you.
My #1 new read coming out this summer is The Haunting. 18th c village in England meets We Have Always Lived In The Castle. What could go wrong?! Read my review here. Pre-order now and you’ll have it right around its release date.
Need my top 10 of the past 24 years? A mix of memoir and novels with a splash of accessible social science non-fiction? Here’s that list.
*Sarah Manguso’s Liars, The Names by Florence Knapp and How To Be Well: Navigating Our Self-care Epidemic, One Dubious Cure at A Time by Amy LaRocca.
I just picked up Pictures Of You from off the wait list at said library. There is a fun life size replica of an orca made by a local elementary school in the lobby! and lots of fun summer programs going on. It’s a cool and happening place for sure.

Oooh, I hope it's still there when I get back. And - I don't know _Pictures of You_. Report back if you love it!
Stiff by Mary Roach. You know I love my non-fiction! … and it came from my local library 📚💖
Another library book, hurray!!! And one I love. Let me know what you think, Sar.
