Just tossing down those low cards and walking out the swinging doors into a dark night. Skedaddle out the back door. Sayonara to the boss who’s terrible, the co-worker who is a bully.
“Every gambler knows…
…the secret to surviving
“..is knowin’ what to throw away and knowin’ what to keep.”
Walking away from . . .
the hairdresser who keeps going too short with our hair
the volunteer gig
the book idea that might be easier but wouldn’t be as honest (lol, that one’s mine)
a friendship that we give way too much to
the trainer who’s sometimes great but sometimes also a total asshole.

Do you know when to fold 'em?*
*note: I’m differentiating here between *knowing* and *doing*. Sometimes we “know” and can’t “do”. And that’s ok.
I think another line in that song is important here. “Every hands a winner and every hands a loser” it’s all about the goal of your “game”. Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep is different than folding. I think particularly as women we are constantly trying to make things work and perhaps we try a little too long BUT couldn’t the world use a bit more of that right now? Nevertheless she persisted.
Good point, Marlena! Knowing the goal of your game is crucial. I love that you added that in. Depending on what the goal is then we might want to stay in the game. But I also agree that we sometimes try too hard to make something work. I know I have! Thanks for bringing in both perspectives.
A fun way to touch on boundaries and dealbreakers. (In a weird twist, my hairdresser cut my hair 4 inches shorter than I asked- I ended up loving it, so it worked out. I did have one person who made my hair look like David Cassidy's shag after I asked her not to... I realized that he may be to dated a cultural reference and also, I don't think she actually spoke English, which was part of the misunderstanding... did not see her again!).
I think I knowwwww, I have to really listen though because I tend to ignore it until I’m miserable.
I agree with this one. And have gotten better at choosing not to be as miserable for as long, but am probably still willing to try a little too long.
Yes, same, Larissa! I’ve gotten better at it still sometimes wait too long. Thanks for weighing in here. 💗
I’ve been guilty of this too, Holly. But that’s why I’m differentiating between knowing and doing! They don’t always happen in tandem! lol.

Any story that can weave in David Cassidy is one I'm here for! Glam...and yet of a different era :-) Thanks for sharing Diahann.
