Happy New Year! I hope the holiday break left you somewhat refreshed and with pleasure, if not joy, lingering in your bones. As we adjust to writing “2025” in our checkbooks journal and letters, I thought I’d start this #FridayQuestion with some very low hanging fruit. A simple “yes” or “no” poll.
Are you doing a Dry January?
I, myself, am not.
On Friday evenings, my family and I walk to one of our two regular neighborhood restaurants. And while I’m there, I enjoy a cocktail: usually an Aperol Spritz. These days I’m not much of a drinker but I love color in all areas of my life, and here in the grey of Berlin winters I suck in as much as I can. The bright orange liquid and slice of Navel orange make me happy.
So…what about you?

Comments are also always welcome. See you next week!
This is my 7th DJ. I love the reset to begin my year after a usually overly busy holiday season. As the adult child of an alcoholic and awareness that alcoholism runs in my family I am constantly evaluating my relationship with alcohol during the year but also take advantage of DJ as a time of evaluation and introspection. I love the renewed rhythm of my sleep, the glowing skin and the general feeling of well being. Last night we had dinner at Nikos and there were several lovely mocktails that felt colorful, fresh and enlivening with their use of shrubs and juices. This year in particular with the moving from our home next week a clear mind and a clear heart are especially important. But I'm with you and a Aperol Spritz is like drinking a sunrise or sunset in a glass. Cheers my friend and a very Happy New Year! xoxo
I love the grounded self-awareness I hear in your answer, Deborah. And so appreciate you sharing the reasons for this intentional break. So grateful we're connected! Huge to you, my friend! <3
I am! I'm taking the month off from alcohol and online shopping - two vices that tend to get out of hand. I'm excited for the challenge of detoxing and hope to start February a little more grounded and ready to lean into my value of "all things in moderation." Happy New Year!
I am not doing Dry January this year but it's interesting that your question falls on the same day that I got a NYTimes breaking news alert saying that the Surgeon General wants to put a cancer warning on alcohol.
I saw that, Allison! The comments on that NYT article are fascinating. While I think Dr Murthy is fantastic (his ideas around community and loneliness and his book, _Together_, should be more talked about) I kind of wish he would focus on something that's truly affecting everyone like the BMI and maybe kick that out of use. That might get more traction than waiting on Congress anyway!
Also-and this is a whole other thing-the warning labels on cigarettes here are ghastly. Like graphic and gross. And everyone still smokes like a chimney! I'd be curious how affective warning labels actually are. Anyone know?
I think I do DJ without planning it very much- I am naturally thinking of cutting back on things that feel indulgent, saving money and staying hydrated! ;)
Maybe now's a good time to mention I'm reading _All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess_! The moral of which seems to be don't deprive yourself of too many indulgences. Hahaha! But seriously, thanks for sharing and here's to more water intake!!

And - I LOVE Nikos! Good to hear they have plenty of mocktails on the menu.

That's terrific, Erin. I love how both ideas are connected! Hope that adds to their stickiness in keeping to the goal. Happy New Year to you!
